INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM AND THE YOUTH!
“Education
is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”
-Nelson Mandela
Heard that, right?
Well, according to almost everyone education is something which you can really
use to change the world. It is like a necessity now. But the problem stands
that who will change the future world if the youth tries to take its own life, any
idea?
No, I don’t know. Right?
Well, every hour, one student commits suicide in India, with about 28 such
suicides reported every day, according to data compiled by the National Crime
Records Bureau (NCRB). Shocking, isn’t it?
Ever thought of what makes students do so? Why do they take such a big step
when it is their time of ripening in life, why do they fall from the tree so
early?
I’ll answer you, it is the EDUCATION SYSTEM! Well, the education is framed in
such a way that every Indian child is sure to feel useless at a certain point
in time.
Let me give you a brief, the Indian education system has a system of 10+2.
In schools, the stages are Primary (1st to 5th), Middle (6th
to 8th), Secondary (9th to 10th), and last but
not the least, Senior Secondary (11th to 12th). After
passing through these stages, one has to acquire a degree in a particular field
in order to attain a well-settled life. So much hustle and bustle.
According to the Indian society, every child is expected to study well and grab
good scores in their academics and if they don’t, they’re easily tagged as a “PERSON
WITH NO SKILLS OR USELESS”. Endless, constant pressure from their parents and
relatives masks up their talents and capabilities. Is someone who is good at
studies only successful?
Instead, students should be encouraged to pursue their passion and what they
like to do. Focussing more on practical knowledge instead of theories would
make students better citizens which would improve their understanding skills
and make them someone who they really are born for! But in India, it’s completely
vice-versa. Youth is forced to study certain subjects and don’t have the freedom
to choose their streams without any hesitation. There are superstitions and
misconceptions in the streams as well. Their personality and intelligence level
is judged upon when they pursue streams and subjects of their choice!
WHY DO WE DO THIS? THIS IS A QUESTION THAT STILL MANY INDIANS ARE YET TO
ANSWER TO THE STUDENTS!
Not being able to match up to the expectations and dreams of their parents puts
students in a position of constant stress and anxiety which affects their
mental health and then take a big step to end themselves.
We should, instead, support them for what they are good at and also their
abilities. A singer when asked to perform a surgery is stupidity, isn’t it?
Then why should we take such steps which result in such a situation?
This is a serious problem and can’t be ignored easily. It is a social issue.
Remember, not everyone is a legend but what we contribute to the society is the
change that counts!
